Summary

Nalani McCutcheon directs a block of instruction on how to effect behavior change among students, pointing out that knowledge of climate change does not equate to action on the student's part. She makes three key factors in effecting student action:

1.) The power of significant time spent outside with nature

2.) The power of observation

3.) The poeer of longitudinal data

She reference the work of Tom Tanner in support of her argument, specifically an extensive set of interviews he conducted of environmental activists in 1980. Two factors showed up as key to the participants becoming activists: significant time spent outside and the presence of an adult role model.

After the lecture, Nalani breaks into a workshop in which everyone discusses barriers to providing students access to the natural world and the time and freedom to explore it. She wraps up the workship by citing strong evidence in research connecting children's access to nature with higher test scores. She gives much credit to the power of obsevation in explaining the phenomenon.

Learning Goals

To establish the importance of giving students access to nature in order to move students from knowledge to action, then discuss barriers and means of circumnavigating those barriers.
